Why do my WhatsApp photos show the wrong date?
WhatsApp compresses photos when sending them, which strips the EXIF metadata — including the shooting date. Restoring from a backup can also reset dates. The filename (e.g. IMG-20240115-WA0001.jpg) usually still contains the real date, which is what this tool recovers.
Which formats are supported?
JPEG (.jpg / .jpeg) only — that is the only common format where date metadata can be rewritten reliably in a browser. PNG and TIFF files will be listed but skipped, and HEIC photos (iPhone default) need to be converted to JPEG first.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. All processing — reading, date detection and EXIF rewriting — happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your photos never leave your device, which is also why the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
What date will be written into my photos?
Priority order: (1) the date in the WhatsApp filename, (2) the existing EXIF date if there is no filename date, (3) the file's modification date. WhatsApp filenames carry a date but no time, so the time is set to 12:00 noon. Photos whose EXIF date already matches are automatically skipped.
What is free, and what costs money?
Up to 50 photos per batch are completely free, with no account required. Larger batches need the unlimited version — a small one-time payment that keeps this tool running and ad-free.
